The Cathedral of Santa Maria in Girona is located in the upper part of the city. It has the widest Gothic nave in the world, at a total of 22.98 metres. Construction began in the 11th century in the Romanesque style, following work during the 13th century in the Gothic style. The Cathedral was finished in the 18th century and is a cultural asset.
Its long history has provided it with a heritage of high cultural value made available to the visitor. Among its works, the Creation Tapestry, Paleochristian Sarcophagi, Book of the Blessed (10th century), Altar altar and the Episcopal Chair (4th century) stand out.
The highlights:
Cloister of the Cathedral of Girona: The word cloister comes from the Latin "claudere y claustrum", which means to close and to close up. It was dedicated to cloistered life and monastic life. The cloister of Girona Cathedral is of Romanesque style from the 12th century and is the oldest cloister in Catalonia.
The Tapestry of Creation: Made in the 11th century, it is one of the best examples of Romanesque textile art. It covered the part of the wall inside the Romanesque cathedral in liturgical times. The creation tapestry stages the creation of the world through God, the Genesis.
