"The Alhambra is the most visited monument in Spain and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. With our guide you can skip the line and enjoy interesting stories and legends and breathtaking views from the best viewpoints in Granada.
The Alhambra was an authentic walled city built by the Nasrid Kings of Granada in the last period of Muslim rule in Spain.
The name Alhambra comes from the Arabic qalat-al-hamra, which means "red", "red castle" or "red castle". A first theory about this meaning would be based on the reddish color of the ferruginous materials used in its construction, mostly adobe bricks.
But this is not so, since today it is "certain" that the walls of the Alhambra were white, as are those of the Generalife or the houses of the Albaicín. It is possible that the reddish color comes from the glow of the torches at nightfall, which gave the walls this special color.
It would then be the inhabitants of the Albaicín and the Vega who would give it this name.
The Alhambra is a jewel of Arab architecture, the last standing bastion in Europe. It was built by the Nasrid sultans of the Kingdom of Granada in the last historical period of Muslim domination in the Peninsula.
A personal approach to this period in the history of Spain and Granada will bring us even closer to the knowledge of this impressive monument.
The Alhambra was then a walled city, protected from external enemies. It is believed that the first thing to be built was the Alcazaba, where everything else was a wasteland on the hill called Sabika. It was also built over another ancient castle that existed before the Alcazaba itself.
The Alhambra is much larger than what the visitor sees at first glance or has been told. The Alhambra occupies an area much larger than the Alcazaba, the Nasrid Palaces and the Palace of Charles V.
In its origins it was an authentic palatine city, like an acropolis, fortified and isolated from the city of Granada. Its extension was about 104,000 square meters, with its buildings and neighborhoods characteristic of any Muslim city.
