The islet of Sancti-Petri, according to ancient geographers, was the site of the famous Temple of Hercules, also called Herakleion, one of the most important sanctuaries of the ancient world. According to Pomponius Mela, the remains of the mythological god were buried beneath the temple.
The temple began its decline in the 4th century until it lost its former grandeur completely under Visigothic rule. The attacks and destruction suffered, the action of the sea, the exploitation of oyster stone quarries and the successive occupations that have been developed on it, made the sanctuary practically disappear. Nowadays, the castle is a group of buildings erected from the end of the 16th century and during the 17th century. On this route, you can admire the beautiful spectacle of the sunset next to the castle, with relaxing background music and a glass of cava and soft drinks for children.
