Hiking along the Gollizno Route

Description

Hiking Granada, The Gollizno hiking route is a circular walk through the history of the town of Moclín, from its caves with cave paintings to its castle and walls. It descends to the village of Olivares and runs over a footbridge and bridges through the Tajos de la Hoz, the steep gorge created by the river Velillos.

We start from Calle Real, descending along Calle Esperanza to the end of the village. A steep path, through the mountains and pine forests, will take us to the village of Olivares. On the descent towards the village, the whole valley of the river Velillos, framed by a sea of olive trees, will appear before us.

After Olivares we will enter the Tajos de la Hoz, a natural gorge carved out by the constant flow of water which, together with the lush riverside vegetation, will create a pleasant sensation for the visitor. The walk continues upstream, under the watchful eye of the towers of the Nasrid fortress. On reaching the old Presa de la Luz, the bridge, built so that the visitor can continue to enjoy the walk, will leave us next to a small alameda, where we can rest and refresh ourselves.

A zigzagging, narrow path leads us out of this landscape of water and beauty to the Corcuela Fountain.

Following the route upwards, in the castle cliffs, we find the Neolithic cave paintings of Corcuela. We continue along the path and approach the village of Moclín, which is home to the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, sanctuary of the venerated canvas of the Cristo del Paño (Christ of the Cloth). A visit to the Casa del Pósito is also a must.

Moclín is a municipality located 33 km. from Granada, which can be reached via the N-432 towards Córdoba. Its historical legacy is made up of cave paintings in the caves (Abrigo de Corcuela, Cueva de la Araña, Cueva de las Vereas, Cueva de Malalmuerzo...) and the Roman settlements found in different areas of the municipality. Also of note is the Hispano-Muslim heritage (perhaps the most important and undoubtedly, the most appreciable), where the role of the system of watchtowers, walls and fortresses was fundamental in the defence of the Kingdom of Granada".
